Adopt a hedgehog

Thank you for choosing to adopt! Whether you already own hedgehogs or you will be a new hedgie parent, we will be with you every step of the way to match you up with your new family member. Hedgehogs are an exotic species and require special care. Please do your research before filling out an adoption application to make sure a hedgehog is the right pet for you.

Step 1: Fill out an adoption application.  Part of our application process includes checking references. We  request 3 personal references and an exotic vet reference. If you don't have an exotic vet already, we can help you find one. If you have a rescue hedgehog in mind that you would like to adopt, please be sure to include that in your application. If you are looking for a specific gender, color, etc.,  We will put you on our waitlist and contact you once we have a rescue that matches your description but please note, you may have to wait a little longer. Make sure you browse the hedgehogs we already have available for adoption first. You may fall in  love with one who is waiting to go home!

Step2:  We will contact you for an over the phone interview. This interview allows us to get to know you better and answer any questions you may have. We will also go over general hedgehog care, supplies you have or may need, and setting up an appointment for you to come meet our hedgehogs.  If approved, we will ask you to put down a deposit towards a rescue as a sign of commitment. This $27 deposit is non refundable and $25 goes towards the total amount we ask for an  adoption donation ($2 is a paypal processing fee). You have ONE week (7 calendar days) to make arrangements to pick up your little buddy. If you cannot make it within those 7 days, you will forfeit your deposit and your rescue hedgehog will be up for adoption. If you are a "no show" to your appointment to finalize your adoption, and I haven't heard from you prior to the appointment, your adoption will be automatically  cancelled. If you need to change your appointment, please be courteous and contact me ahead of time.

Step 3. On the day of  adoption, we will go over the adoption contract together. Please allow an hour  to finish the adoption process. This will give us another chance to go over anything we may not have covered. You may also be asked to bring in your supplies so we can make sure you have the correct items. Please note: Your hedgehog may not be able to go  home with you  yet and adoption may not be finalized until you have all the necessary supplies to take care of your hedgehog. Your hedgehog will go home with a snuggle sack that he/she has been sleeping in so he/she has something familiar when they arrive at their new home. We also recommend a hard carrier if no one else will be holding your hedgehog on the drive home. We do not recommend the driver holding the hedgehog on the drive home due to dangers this may pose. If you do not have a carrier, we can provide one for you for an extra fee, just let us know ahead of time. Please make sure to bring your ID since we will need this to complete the adoption contract. you can make deposits and donations  to Miami Hedgehog Rescue via PayPal ( paypal.me/miamihedgehogrescue) or cash. We also accept any major debit/credit card in person, although 10% is added due to third party fees for this convenience.

Adoption Donations

A non refundable $25 deposit is required to hold your hedgehog once your application is approved. We request a suggested donation towards Miami Hedgehog Rescue and donation amounts  vary per hedgehog but can range from $75 and up. We also have supplies on occasion and they will be available for purchase.

Additional Policies:

• You must be at least 18 to adopt. If you are a minor looking to adopt a hedgehog from Miami Hedgehog Rescue, a parent or guardian MUST be the one adopting with the understanding that are the they are the ones that are  legally responsible for this animal. They must also come with you to pick up your hedgehog.

• Filling out an adoption application DOES NOT guarantee approval. For the safety of our hedgehogs, we do a thorough check on any prospective homes. If you are denied, it is either because you have lied on your application, your references don't check out, we feel our hedgehog will not be safe with you, or something feels off. If you are denied for any reason, we will not accept another application from you in the future at any time.

• We work very hard to match up prospective adopters to the right hedgehog based on temperament and experience.  You have two weeks (14 calendar days) to foster your hedgehog before he /she is permanently yours. If for some reason, the placement does not work out, you are welcome to return your hedgehog and we will refund you your adoption donation minus the deposit. If after 14 days, you have decided a hedgehog is not right for you, you MUST surrender your adopted hedgehog back to Miami Hedgehog Rescue.  Rehoming your hedgehog to someone else automatically breaks your adoption contract forfeiting your rights over your hedgehog and Miami Hedgehog Rescue will take legal actions to obtain said hedgehog. If for any reason your hedgehog becomes pregnant, this automatically breaks your adoption contract forfeiting your rights over your hedgehog and Miami Hedgehog Rescue will take legal actions to obtain said hedgehog and the entire litter.

• We do not adopt out opposite sexed hedgehogs if you already have a hedgehog living with you. Ex: If you already have a male hedgehog, we will not adopt out a female to you. This policy is in effect to avoid " accidental" breeding.

• We do not ship.

• We don't adopt out to anyone who lives in a state where keeping a hedgehog is illegal. This includes: California, Georgia, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., the 5 boroughs of New York.

• Policies are subject to change at any time.

VOLUNTEER

• We can always use help cleaning enclosures, and socializing hedgehogs. If you are interested in getting a hedgehog in the future but you're not quite sure, volunteering will give you the hands on experience you will need when you get your hedgehog.

•Transportation: Sometimes we need volunteers to help transport our hedgehogs to our fosters. We provide the carriers.

• Fostering: We will never turn a hedgehog down. Ever. Sometimes we can use a foster if we have reached maximum capacity. We supply food, medical care, and do home checks often. We will sit down with you and go over all the basic information you will need. Hedgehog experience not necessary (since we will teach you) but its definitely a plus. All our foster homes are background checked for the protection on our animals.
